Escher-style Art by Students of Math Teacher Mary Jo Hughes
in her 2011 8th Grade class at Clearwater Middle School, Minnesota

8th graders at Clearwater Middle School learn about tessellations in a flex class that focuses on geometric transformations. They apply what they learn about translation, reflection, and rotation to make many different design templates that can be replicated to make a tessellation. The students choose their favorite design template to complete an artistic tessellation as their final project.
The results aren't just geometry. These kids are clearly quite artistic, too.

But wait, there's more! Mary Jo Hughes gives us a recursive surprise by writing about her kids, this website, and tessellations on page 13 of her
PDF online magazine, MathBits. Check it out by clicking here.
