A poster celebrating Kahuku (Hawai'i) Public School Library's
45th Anniversary
November 19th, 2013

The theme of the celebration was sea turtles. In the Hawai'ian language, that's "Honu".

Books and sea turtles gave me a natural starting point for this poster. It contains no new tessellation themes. The turtle tessellation is a light modification of Bruce Bilney's hexagonal turtle tessellation. I moved the fins around a little. The "5 seahorses" dodecahedron is really Bruce Bilney's 6 seahorse tessellation: I simply removed 1 seahorse from every group of 6, to make a hexagon become a pentagon. Then I put pentagons together to make a dodecahedron. (A dodecahedron is a sphere-like solid 3D object made from 12 pentagons). The Lauwiliwilinukunukuoioi (longnose butterfly fish) tessellation, seashell tessellation, and shark tessellation are my own inventions.

This whole poster is, of course, a tribute to M. C. Escher's famous "Reptiles" (1943).
