an artistic triangular tessellation of cuttlefish
from well-known tessellation artist Bruce Bilney of Australia

Bruce Bilney's squid motif tessellation art based on tessellating triangles

If you've done tessellations before, you know that many tessellation artists start with a simple geometric shape that they know will tessellate, and then just alter its outline until it starts to resemble something else, like an animal or a toaster.

The piece at left is based on equilateral triangles, if you look at it one way, parallelograms if you look at it another way,... and hexagons if you look at it a third way. Can you see those triangles, parallelograms, and hexagons?
